"Some men are born great, some men achieve greatness, and some men have greatness thrust upon them," said Shakespeare. The heroes journey is a journey that makes life worth living. It starts out with harsh reality and then something makes you push through until the end when you either succeed or fail. Even failing at the end doesn't make you a failure. At the end of it all when you pushed yourself as far as you can, it is all worth it.
I read a book the other day called The Giver. It's a book about a boy named Jonas who grew up in a community where there was no color or no choices. In this community there was someone to choose your job for you. This boy had greatness thrust upon him. Jonas's separation was when he was chosen as the receiver of memories. The receiver is the only person that can see color, and know about the history of the world. When he was initiated into his new job, he learned so much about how crooked his community was. He wanted to get out. He wanted the people to understand and know what love, hate, wind, and snow is. The giver of memories told him that if he left all the memories would go back to the community. He left, and took his little brother and ran out of the community. He left everything he knew behind, in order to create a better community for the people.
Of course it was hard for Jonas to leave everything he knew behind him. It was probably really hard for him to take his baby brother with him, but he had to do it. Gabe, his little brother, would have been killed if he was left behind. Jonas had to experience the entire journey from the separation, where he was called upon, then pushed through the threshold, then descended. After the first phase he was initiated into the abyss, he was given a mentor and then transformed. He ran away. Although he never returned he still created a better community.
the completion of the heroes journey is what separates the week from the strong. It shows who just floats through life, like the people of the giver, and who's on the world to conquer everything and anything they can no matter how hard, no matter the sacrifice, and no matter what. The heroes journey makes you a hero.
