As you wonder be thankful this is a romace story.

With events happening theres always a wise old man who loves to shead some light on the story. The romantic hero always has to have a beautiful vision he always wants.Gatsby dream was to get with Daisy. He through parties just so he could have a run in with her. I dont think the love will always be real and heart felt like this. With every story there always a number that is 3 and thats magic talking. His group was Daisy jordan and his self.

The numbre 3 is like magic. The magic is put through daisy and gatsby and there was nothing like there first kiss and is was magicical. The first kiss meant that this would get hot and get a little crazy. Gatsby friend made a date so he and daisy can meet again. There was no other friend like nick he always made sure the parties was crazy. Gatsby had no love from anyone they didnt even care if he ahd passed.

In reality Gatsby never found the love of his life . He had a ice box in his heart and the world knew is.The love was over with out even letting him get a taste of it.Gatsby was a good man had nobody never realized it.

The Giver is a book about community that has no color, no thoughts, no feelings and you live a life that no one has Had. When he turns twelve he receives the job of receiver of memory. His job is to receive all the memories for the community. This is when Jonas's Hero's Journey begins.
The ceremony of tadre's is when all the kids turning receive the job that they will have the rest of there lives. The Giver chosen to stay behind to help the community. After Jonas left, his memories would scare the community and the Giver wanted to stay and support them. Now that Jonas was the receiver he had lots of things to do and take care of. In the meantime Jonas was testing his follower by bringing Gabe through freezing cold and starvation. The ending is both sad blissful. Either way the reader interprets it through, Jonas and Gabe were still free.

There is somethings romantic in the way the readers see the hero. he goes through the same framework of the romance motif. This story, just like many others, wouldn't be great without blueprints of the romance motif. So he finally gets to the top of a snow covered, and he remembers one of the memories that the Giver once shared with him, he then slides down the hill, and gets to else where, that's how the book ends.
Quite interesting, but it also leaves us waiting to know more about it. Maybe it didn't really explain the whole book, but the important part of it is that the Hero's Journey was one of the most difficult lessons I most learned. No matter what the Hero's Journey makes you a Hero.

This essay The Romance Hero is the topic to go with because i was once in love and knew how someone felt when they got heart broken from love and this has to do with a book call The Giver. The boy in that story was in love, but people there didn't know what love really was and that boy fell in love. But that story is where I'm at and i fell in love with a wonderful girl and she was telling me all the the time how much she loved me and how much she wanted to be with me and i was the sucker for believing her. She used me for things she wanted and it took me a little while to figure all that out and i finally just put all the information that i had come up with for the 4 months that me and her were together and i couldn't do it any more but to this day i still think bout her and my heart is broke into tiny little pieces. I still think about her every night wondering why she did that to me but i guess time changes and people get over things because i will move on and find the perfect girl in my life

The Heroic Journey of Jay Gatsby

Many stories base the Hero’s Journey around one character; those characters usually have one purpose and one journey. But what about Jay Gatsby? The question I ask is: Does man have only one journey? Or, does man have many? Jay Gatsby had two.
In the tales of “The Great Gatsby,” Jay Gatsby was the son of a poor farming family. During his teenage years, he enlisted in the United States Army and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant during the Great War. Through his travels as a soldier, he met Daisy; the love of his life. This has demonstrated Jay Gatsby’s separation. His calling, being the war, and his threshold, were he would meet Daisy. His descent is when he must leave Daisy and go to Europe for the war. Soon, upon Gatsby’s leaving, Daisy will marry Tom Bucanon.
When Gatsby leaves, he enters his abyss: Being gone for Five years of the war and not knowing if he will ever see Daisy again. Through his abyss, Gatsby acquires a mentor by the name of Dan Cody, who leaves him money to get an education. This will help lead to his success and wealth. Thus, leading to his initiation and transformation into the nouvelle riche.
Now we come to his creation. Frequently, Gatsby would hold lavish parties in attempt to gain the attention of Daisy. Soon, with the help of Nick Carroway (a cousin of Daisy’s), Gatsby reunites with Daisy. Falling madly in love, they start an affair. Starting his second journey, Gatsby tries to get daisy to leave Tom. He almost succeeds, but, is assassinated.
So it is true that man can have more than one journey in life. Even though he barely even started his second journey, Jay Gatsby is not only a hero, but a veteran as well.

Treena Regis -- Final Exam Essay

We all face some sort of tragedy in our life. Someone you were close to might of died or something you loved might of slipped from you like a job.Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law or gods. Many writers such as Shakespeare demonstrate tragedy in storys to relate to people.
In the story The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet the love and passion of Romeo and Juliet were very vivid. Because of their family fued, Montague vs. Capulet, both families lost their precious child. If people weren't so caught up in "gangs" and wars then there would be less death. A lot of people don't need to experiance tragedy in the form of death. After death then they realize the things they could of changed. It was a sad tragedy that Romeo did not get his Juliet and Juliet did not get her Romeo instead they met up in the after life.
A war results in tragedy. People lose their lives or the ones they love in war. In Troy war was fought over a women and to obtain more land. Civilians died for nothing. Tragedy stikes someone the second they lose something they care most about.
The reason why we show tragedy in books and movies is to show life goes on even after a dramatic event. But sometimes we are the ones aiding in a tragedy without realizing it. Like in Romeo and Juliet, if their families weren't in arguement over a name, Romeo and Juliet would of been together. Its hard to stay clear of drama but in the end there are ways to avoid it. Unless there was mother nature or natural causes of death then in those cases tragedy strikes with no precations. Tragedy is when something we do not want to happen happens. Our lives can always relate to tragedy.

Do you consider yourself being a functional family or dysfunctional family? Can you define the difference?Do all functional families believe in the same traits?Whats the difference between functional and dysfunctional families that functional families don't have or want to have.
This relates good to the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowery.Jonas was the main character and the outcast of the family. His parents had dark colored eyes as well has his sister but Jonas had light colored eyes gray.He thought differently than his family and the community has well because they all believed in the same rules same everything.GE had more than an open mind then all the the others.
To them they thought that functional families never had pain they were always happy, well educated.they were also categorized by age, gender, not race because they were all Caucasian. They considered dysfunctional families let me use an example birth mothers. They were considered as a joke it was a job but filthy one at that as well as the fathers regular families weren't allowed to have there own babies because they were in their own little world with their jobs.
Functional families were assigend babies they had to go to all types of procecduers.Thats why i think that they were dysfunctional families because they thought to them they weren't allowed because they would look bad to their community. It was as though they were taking a baby away from their rightful parents they were never gonna know that the parents there with aren't their real parents but loonies.
As time passes by Jonas becomes more aware of how the community is trying to hide bad memories so that only the community could only relay on good memories and don't have to worry about the past and the troubled life's they once had.As Jonas turned twelve he was assigend to be the giver were a person would pass him on the bad memories and keep them alive but only for himself which was something that Jonas didn't like doing because he thought that it wasn't fair for him to keep alive all those memories and look at the community as everything is peachy nice.
One reason why i like that what Jonas did to the community was that he left the city knowing that the people would have to face those memories that they wouldn't know what to do with them and that's why Jonas was assigned for that because if someone dreamt about something he could go to Jonas and he would tell them that everything was alright to take a pill and everything would get back to normal. That's why i like Jonas he had a new brother thought is was his real brother and took him with him on his long journey to a new place were they wouldn't be no more fake communities.
Another reason why i think Jonas did what he did because he saw his father kill a new born because he weighed less that his other twin baby because there couldn't be two alike that's how messed up the community was. That's why it was good for Jonas do what he did if i were in his shoes i would have done the same.

Jose Gomez-Final Exam Essay

In the book, "The Giver", the Giver himself goes through a romance hero's story, because he has all seven stages. He has the Faithfull Followers, and he is the Wise Old Man. There is many Dreams and a couple Number Threes, he shoes alot of Magic when he is with Jonas, and he Tests the Followers. Finally there is some Betrayal towards him but not alot.

The Faithfull Followers to the Giver are Jonas which is the currant reciever, his daughter which was the old reciever because they did what ever the Giver asked them to do. The community was also a follower because they look to the Giver for advise when they have hard decisions because he has wisdom. For that reason the Giver is the Wise Old Man.

The Dreams actually the memories for example the hill full of snow, and it snowing while he is on a sled on top of the hill sleding down the hill. To Jonas that memory feels like a dream because he has never seen or experienced anything like that before. The Number Threes are Jonas, the Giver, and Gabe (the baby) because when the Giver gives some memories to Jonas, Jonas then gives some memories to Gabe. They also plan Jonas' escape from the community and Jonas takes Gabe.

The Magic is shown when transfering the memories from the Giver to Jonas or from Jonas to Gabe, because of how they are transfered. They are transfered by placing their hand on their back and then it just happens, "like magic." Testing the Followers is when the Giver transfers the memories to Jonas and his daughter. He tests them by seeing if they would recieve the memories. He tested Jonas again by planning his escape and seeing if he would leave and he did, but he took Gabe betraying the Giver. That is the only Betrayal that is done by Jonas towards the Giver. His daughter betrays him by asking for a release, a release is when the community kills them, she couldn't take the pain of the memories.

Clayton Lewis Final Exam Essay

The Great Gatsby is a tale of romance. In this novel, Gatsby portrays the role of a romance hero. He fits the description by having a mysterious past with a mysterious orgin. There are plenty of romantic motifs that can proove why these statements are true.

To be a romance hero you must have faithful followers which in Gatsby's case are Jordan and Nick. However, Nick is the remaining friend in the end after showing loyalty by organizing and attending Gatsby's funeral. With the faith friends comes the wise old man by the name of Myer Wolfshine. If it wasnt for Mr. Wolfshine, Gatsby would not have had all the riches he was able to obtain.

A romantic hero must have a dream. Gatsby's dream was Daisy. The reason he even threw parties at his house was to find her. Without dreams the romance will never be real. This hero also needs a click, a magic group of 3. In Gatsby's case the click involves Daisy, Nick, and the one and only Gatsby.

Afliation with the magic 3 means there must be a magic moment. This magic is between Gatsby and Daisy sharing their first kiss. No romance is complete without the first kiss. With that first kiss means ther was a cause for the situation to have esculated. Gatsby's number one follower steps up to the test by helping the two meet in arrangement of a tea party. Nick shows no signs of betrayel unlike everyone else who interacted with Gatsby. They were friends with Gatsby when he threw parties and had money but when he died, The Great Gatsby no longer mattered.

In conclustion The Great Gatsby never found his lover in the end. His life ceased with several gunshots to the back. His life of romance was over with no warning. The only thing to know is that Gatsby was a man of these true romantic qualities and deserves all that recognition.

Sarah Grabers fianl exam

In the hero's journey there is a passage of heros through three stages which are, the separation, the initiation, and the return. After some of these journeys the heros life has been impacted. Like Jonas' lif was in the Giver. He was a boy who lived in a white and black community. They went to school only up until they became twelves and had jobs just like the real world does now, but they didnt have any feelings, they couldnt feel pain, or sadness or even happiness. When they became twelves they stopped going to school and started working just like the adults did.
Jonas' calling was when he was an eleven getting ready to turn a twelve. He started going through stages that normal teen age boys go through. He did voulenteer work after school just like everyone else did because it prepared them for life after school when they turned to be a twelve and started working. But he started to see colors for the first time, and he didnt know what it was, he was the only one who was seeing them. He thought he was going crazy or something because he was the only who was seeing colors. He was really apperihensive about everything especially about be coming a tweleve.
When the big day finally came, the ceremony of the twelves, Jonas was really apprehensive about it. Durind the ceremony Jonas was skipped, so he got scarred and upset, he thought that they just totally forgot about him. Everyone was suprised that they skipped him because people never get skipped. At the end of the ceremony onas was called to the stage, come to find out they didnt forget about him, he was skippen on purpose. The reason he was skipped is because he received a special job, he became the new recevier. The receiver takes all of the memories from everyone in the community, the take all of the feelings like pain sadness and happiness from everyone, so the receiver is the only who feels anything and everything.
Jonas wasnt really excited about becoming the new receiver at first because he didnt know what the receiver did or anything about the job. But after awhile Jonas started to like it, he got to know what eveyrthing was and how it felt to have feeling, he always wondered what it would be like. He got to see everything that went on in the community, he got to do whatever he wanted and say whateve rhe wanted to. The old receiver taught Jonas eerything he needed to know about the job. After Jonas found everything out and saw everything, he started to see that the community wasnt as good as everyone put it out to be, the people wasnt as great like he thought.
Jonas and the old receiver made a plan to have Jonas leave the community and fine a different one that would be alot better for him, and if he did then maybe he could go back and get everyone else. After awhile when they got the plan all done and everything, Jonas decided to leave the community and everyone the he ever loved and cared about. After a few days of being gone he thought he got to a new community, but he really didnt, he was just remembering a memory that the old receiver gave to him when he first got the receiver job. The memory was a snow covered hill with a red sled and he was sledding down with the wind in his face and he was having a blast. But like always everything must come to an end sooner or later and for Jonas it was sooner than he thought it would be.

UMAR IJAZ - FINAL EXAM ESSAY

Beowulf – A Hero’s Journey

The Hero’s Journey, specifically in Literature, is the passage if the hero through three significant stages, the Separation, Initiation, and the Return. After completing the Hero’s Journey, the hero in the story, is significantly changed or his life is dramatically impacted in some way. Paintings, movies, and even real life exhibit the Hero’s Journey, as well as Literature. In the old Anglo-Saxon story, Beowulf, a Hero’s Journey is clearly established in the inception of the story. In the conclusion, there are various indications that Beowulf, distinctly the hero of the story, has completed a hero’s journey.

Beowulf leaving his home in Sweden illustrates the Separation, the first stage of the Hero’s Journey. The motive for this separation, or the calling, can be discerned as the need to go and provide the much needed assistance to Hrothgar in defeating the evil monster Grendel, who has been terrorizing and maliciously feasting on Hrothgar’s people. The actual onset of the journey, known as the threshold is marked by Beowulf’s eagerness and firmness to go on the journey and not return until Grendel is defeated. After the meeting between Beowulf and Hrothgar takes place, the threshold has been promptly crossed and Beowulf seeks out and effortlessly defeats Grendel. After learning of her son’s swift death, Grendel’s mother is filled overcome with rage. Beowulf is lured by his overconfidence, at this point in the story, into the depths of Grendel’s mother’s lake, with the presumptuous hopes of killing her as well. This action constitutes the descent, or the journey into the unknown, as Beowulf has no clue to what kind of a place or situation he is about to get himself into. The calling, threshold, and the descent show a break between Beolwulf and his homeland, while also describing the onset of a great journey.

When the hero of the story finds a mentor and performs various heroic deeds, the second stage of the Hero’s Journey, the Initiation, has started. Beowulf departs from the Initiation stage when he performs other heroic deeds, such killing Grendel’s mother, and in the end the dragon. The trip to Herot can be interpreted to be the abyss or the unknown of this initiation. The Mentor in the Hero’s Journey is almost always a person or another being of some sort. However, this is not the case in Beowulf. The Mentor in Beowulf turns out o be the sword that Beowulf finds in Grendel’s mother’s lake. The same sword he uses to slay her with. After all of the heroic deeds are performed, Beowulf has become disparate or has been transformed, thus this being the transformation of the initiation stage.

The Return marks the final stage of the Hero’s Journey. During the retuen, the heo returns to his home, family, society, etc. At the end of the story Beowulf doesn’t necessarily return to Sweden, but after defeating the dragon, returns to Herot, which has been his home for many years. Beowulf’s people have achieved great security and wealth as a result of this return. Grendel’s defeat and the establishment of a much more wealthier and secure Herot for Hrothgar and his people, is what is known as the creation segment of the return.

Beowulf dies a true hero to the people of Hrothgar and to his own soldiers as well. This death connotes Beowulf’s completion of a Hero’s Journey.

Moala Fakava - Final Exam Essay

The Hero’s Journey relates to The Giver really well. It develops the works dealt with The Giver through out the whole process of The Hero’s Journey. Like the separation, the calling, the threshold, the descent, the abyss, the mentor, the transformation and the creation. If each of these were filled out, that’s basically the whole book without reading it.
The separation is where Jonas has to go to the house of the old to do his volunteer hours. The calling is where Jonas is called to his new job as The Receiver. The threshold is where Jonas sees colors in people because in his organized world, no one or nothing has color. The descent is where Jonas is always going to The Giver and he starts to like his job.
The abyss is where Jonas takes his baby brother Gabe and they leave their organized world into the free world. The mentor is The Giver giving Jonas memories about the free world that The Giver has experienced. The transformation is where The Giver wants to change their organized world due to the releasing of his daughter. That’s where creation comes in and that’s where The Giver and Jonas create a plan where Jonas leaves the organized world to the real world so that the people in the organized world can experience the feeling of lost, just like The Giver.

This is the whole Hero’s Journey process and how it relates to The Giver. Maybe it didn’t really explain the whole book, but the important parts of it. The Hero’s Journey was one of the most difficult lessons I must’ve learned , but I did it anyways.

Carlos A Gaytan Final Exam Essay

The seperation was when Jonas was chosen to be the next Giver. He would have to do more then the normal person, he had a really special job. It was his job chosen for him from the community and that was the calling. Bicause in all of the city or village they needed to do the jobs and he was chosen for being the next Giver. When he was angry because he was thinking about not doing it anymore. But even though he didn' like it he had to do it because he would of been dismissed, so he had something to think about.

When he was feeling different and getting something new was his descent. The main part was when he started seeing the new colors, when he saw the apple changing color. Also when he went to the the Giver's house and saw all those books on the shelves. The initiation was in alot of the book when one of it was when he had to do alot of new things in order to keep up with his training. One of the rules he broke was when he lied to his parents when they asked him if he was okay and he really wasn't. And he needed to keep his training a secret. The abyss was the worst part for him it was also in many places like when he started feeling pain of the war stories he had never felt pain before he didn't know how to deal with it. Also when Jonas saw his father do the dismissal to the baby, when he saw the baby die and his father just did it like nothing was wrong with it.

The mentor was obviously the Giver he was the one who showd Jonas everything he knew. And told him some things that shouldn't of been told, like when he told Jonas about love. Also When he shared the memories with Jonas all the things he knew. Jonas's transformation made him into a whole new person he started feeling things such as sadness. He felt sadness when he saw the baby die that his dad killed. He also gotten the stirrings and his parents had given him pills for, but he had stopped taking them. Also he also when he started lying to his parents when they asked him if he was okey and he really wasn't; when he disobeyed them when he stopped taking the pills. Also he had to keep some secrets in order to keep on with his training. The Creation of the Giver is that the death of his daughter made him want to change the society. With the new things he taught Jonas and the things that he showed him.

Dana Drakulich final draft

Two car garage, white picket fence, two story house, SUV, three kids, a 9-5 job. The average Americans dream. But what happens when you were born into great money? Or what about when you can't afford the dream? What do you do? Lay down and die? Steal, lie, what ever it takes? Well if you haven't noticed, alot of people who can't make an honest living, find ways of getting what they want by means of hustling, stealing, bootlegging, and much more. When it all comes down to it, is it really worth it?
The Great Gatsby, probably one of the best books I've ever read is all about the shady ways of getting money, and the shady things people with money do. Tom and Daisy for example are a couple who have had money there whole lives, they never had to work for anything. Now lets think, where did that get them, board. They started having affairs and lying to each other, being rich isn't all its cracked up to be. Then you look at Jordan Baker, a golf pro who cheats for her championships. why is it that the cheater gets to win instead of the real talent?
Now we have the worst type, Jay Gatsby. A poor child growing up on the streets, he changes his name at the age of 17 ashamed of his parents. He starts hanging around a man by the name of Myer Wolfshine, that's right the very man who single handily fixed the 1919 world series. Gatsby starts getting into bootlegging and making deals with shady people in order to gain wealth. Whats so sad about this is the only reason he wants money is to gain the love of the married Daisy Beocanon. isn't it sad that he would have to buy love, love the one thing in this world that should never have to be bought.
Why is it that the American dream is so important that you would have to do everything wrong to gain it. When you finally have it, are you really even happy? wouldn't you be just as happy floating through life with out any goal any thing to look forward to. it would be easier.

Shawnese Johnson Final Exam Essay

The Hero's Journey relates to The Giver, because Jonas goes through two of the three stages of a Hero (or hero's journey). He never really goes through the third stage because in the book we don't know if he goes home. The last thing we are told is that he is on a sled and on a hill. So he never returns as far as we kno. Jonas does however go through two stages. He goes through separation and initiation.

Jonas's separation
Jonas first goes through separation at the ceremony of 12. He was waiting for his number to be called so that he could receive his job assignment. He was waiting to be called, nervous about what assignment he was going to receive, and about beginning his training. Rite when his number was came up, it never got called. He was skipped. He was ashamed and didn't know what to do or think. At the end of the ceremony everyone was wondering why he had gotten skipped. Then an elder had gotten on stage and made an announcement that he had received the most important job in the community. The receiver of memory. So, at this point in the book, to me this is the separation. This is separation because he is separated from the rest. After today him or his friends will no longer get to play or be together outside of school. They have to go to work for their training. At Jonas's particular job he couldn't even talk about his training with his friends.
Jonas's Initiation
Jonas's initiation to me would be when he receives his first memory. Its also the most important part of the book. he gets to know what others wont. He gets to know about what others don't. He gets to see in color, when everyone else sees in black and white. His mentor is the Giver. The man who actually gives him these abilities, the reason why he has feelings. Jonas learns what pain is. Nobody else in the community knows of any of these emotions. Whether happy or sad. Now that the giver gave the memories to him, he now knows of pain, sadness, and other emotions. Jonas starts his transformation when he learns of death. In the community they don't know of death. They know that when people get old they get released to leave the community. Jonas knows what release is now, and knows it shouldn't be done. He knows that when someone is sentenced to release or goes to get released they are actually getting killed and he doesn't like it. To me he goes through a big transformation here because he knows what they are doing, even though they don't and he knows it shouldn't be done because its wrong. Especially when done to kids.
End
Jonas doesn't really have a return because we never find out what happens to him. I mean he could of gotten hurt, killed, or returned to the community. You never know. I picked this book and the hero's journey because to me he is a hero. He saved a baby named Gabriel from getting released because he knew it wasn't right, and knew it shouldn't of even been thought of being done. To me he is a hero for that, because he has came a very long way from being like the rest of his community & not knowing, to knowing whats right and whats wrong, and doing something about it.

Kereiona Johnson- Final Exam Essay

"Some men are born great, some men achieve greatness, and some men have greatness thrust upon them," said Shakespeare. The heroes journey is a journey that makes life worth living. It starts out with harsh reality and then something makes you push through until the end when you either succeed or fail. Even failing at the end doesn't make you a failure. At the end of it all when you pushed yourself as far as you can, it is all worth it.
I read a book the other day called The Giver. It's a book about a boy named Jonas who grew up in a community where there was no color or no choices. In this community there was someone to choose your job for you. This boy had greatness thrust upon him. Jonas's separation was when he was chosen as the receiver of memories. The receiver is the only person that can see color, and know about the history of the world. When he was initiated into his new job, he learned so much about how crooked his community was. He wanted to get out. He wanted the people to understand and know what love, hate, wind, and snow is. The giver of memories told him that if he left all the memories would go back to the community. He left, and took his little brother and ran out of the community. He left everything he knew behind, in order to create a better community for the people.
Of course it was hard for Jonas to leave everything he knew behind him. It was probably really hard for him to take his baby brother with him, but he had to do it. Gabe, his little brother, would have been killed if he was left behind. Jonas had to experience the entire journey from the separation, where he was called upon, then pushed through the threshold, then descended. After the first phase he was initiated into the abyss, he was given a mentor and then transformed. He ran away. Although he never returned he still created a better community.
the completion of the heroes journey is what separates the week from the strong. It shows who just floats through life, like the people of the giver, and who's on the world to conquer everything and anything they can no matter how hard, no matter the sacrifice, and no matter what. The heroes journey makes you a hero.

Danny Torres--Final Exam Essay

A romance hero in the Giver would be Jonas. For one he may not have any faithful followers but he was one. The wise old man in the book would be the giver for Jonas. Also the dreams weren’t really dreams but memories that the giver passed on to Jonas. The testing of the follower is at the end which is to see if Jonas leaves.

Jonas may not had many followers but he did have one, which in this case would be Gab. All because Jonas could give memories to him that the giver passed on to Jonas. He was a follower to the giver by receiving the memories. Also it was what he had gotten assigned to as his position as a new adult. He listed to the giver and tried to give memories to his friends.

The giver was the wise old man to Jonas because his been through the same things that he’s going through. Also he has more memories then Jonas. He passes the memories to Jonas so he can see how life was in the past. But I would also that Jonas played a role as a wise old man to, by passing some of the memories to Gab. One more wise old man would maybe be Jonas dad because he would take Jonas to help him sometimes. So I see it as the older people you know the more you may know.

The dreams in the giver were memories because Jonas would see them in his head. The only dream he sees and what’s to get to is leaving the community which is more of a goal then a dream. All the memories are magic because their passed on to the receiver. When Jonas first sees color it magic to him because his never seen color before. All the dreams can only be seen by the next giver.

When Jonas left the community it was the testing of the follower because the giver and him had planned it out . But something went wrong so Jonas had to think of his own plan. Which he toke Gab and they both left leaving the community in panic. The giver gave Jonas all the memories but Jonas didn’t receive many memories on courage before his trip. Jonas as a follower to the giver had passed the test to see if he would leave to start new.

Hello to the readers who read this. This is my heroes journey paper on the giver. If you have read this book then you know that Jonas starts and finishes only one heroes journey. This paper is not a summary of the book, but an account of the events that are in the book. It mostly goes by chronological order and sometimes skips ahead but this a heroes journey.

Jonas' seperation was stalled through the first ten fifteen chapters or so till he finally gets hi assignment from the community where he lives. The start of the seperation was when Jonas starts to see color in little flashes at random starting with the apple and ending with the faces of the crowd at the ceremony. The finallity of the seperation was when he got his assignment and couldnt tell anyone what he does in there with the giver. The reason is everyone was talking about their new job and he was secluded from these conversations.

The abyss is the least complicated to understand if you havent read the book or forgot about it if you havent read it in awhile.the first part was when he started to recieve the memories from the giver and obtaining his guidance. The last part is near the end when he decides to leave the town so that his memories will go back to the people of the community so they will not need a giver to hold all the memories. His Mentor of course is the giver himself only because he is the only one that had the same knowledge and jog as jonas and also the giver had already seen it all and had the memories passed on to him. Jonas' transformationis when he sees what releasing someone really means as he watches a video of his dad releasing a baby that was born a twin.

The return in that book isnt really Jonas' but of the memories of the past and the emotions that come with them. The creation is sadly not in the book but it is without a doubt left to your own speculation. To me the memories come back to the people, and then with the new found emotions and pain they get rid of the sameness of their community and live out their lives. Well thats it and i hope that you enjoyed it and have a nice day.

The Hero's Journey
The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Hero's Journey is a term used to define the storyline of a certain character, it's divided in stages: separation, initiation and return; these stages are also divided into events, which describe the way the story unfolds. One example for this, is the novel by Lois Lowry, The Giver.

This book mainly talks about the issues and hero's journey of a relatively young boy , when he faces a new challenge, which, in this case is becoming the next receiver of memory in his community. The character called Jonas daces some changes on his way to his twelfth ceremony; he begins to feel different and somehow apart of the "normal" people of his community, this event can be associated with the Calling event of the separation stage, when the character feels there is some spacial task that he must fulfill or complete; he also analyzes his own surroundings from a different perspective.

Jonas later meets the current holder of memories, who becomes The Giver after he transfers some memories of the world we know to Jonas, this memories are strange to him because Jonas lives in a homogeneous society in which there is no color, feelings or originality between members, everything seems to be under control. The moment Jonas meets The Giver, he enters into the initiation stage, where one of the events is finding a mentor, who guides the character in some tasks in order for him to get closer to becoming a hero.

Finally, Jonas finds out a way for the community to feel again, Jonas feels sad of not being able to share his feeling with them; he decides to leave, so the memories go back to the society, but also, he is leaving to look for "elsewhere." He takes his little adopter brother named Gabriel, when he finds out the true meaning of releasing people in his community (killing them). Gabriel is also susceptible to receive memories, which helps on the harsh journey to elsewhere, that's when the event of creation takes place, Jonas leaves the community in order for his people to feel the beautiful things he felt, like love and many other emotions to learn that there are far more experiences than the ones they've felt so far; even though he won't be able to enjoy them along with his family unit.

He finally gets to the top of a snow covered hill, and he remembers one of the memories that The Giver once shared with him, he then slides down the hill, and gets to elsewhere, that's how the book ends, quite interesting, but it also leaves us wanting to know more about it.

Anthony Smith Final Exam Essay

The Giver is a book about a community that has no color, no thoughts, no feelings. You have to live by the same routine every day. Jonas is the hero in this Hero’s Journey. When he turns twelve he receives the job of Receiver of Memory. The Receiver of Memories job is to receive all the memories for the community. This is when Jonas’s Hero’s Journey begins.

The ceremony of twelve’s is when all the kids turning receive the job that they will have for the rest of their lives (everybody in the community has the same birth day as everybody the same age as them). This is where Jonas receives the job of Receiver of Memory (the calling). In order for him to receive memory he has to go to the Giver for training to get the memory. The Giver will transfer his memories to Jonas (the separation). The moment Jonas walks out the door and goes to training is the moment he starts his journey (the threshold). After a few trainings Jonas could now feel pain, anger, sadness, and can even see color (the descent).

Jonas isn’t aloud to talk to anyone about his training not his family or friends (the initiation). Jonas and the Giver make up make up a plan for Jonas to escape the community. The reason why the want to do that is because they don’t agree with the community. If Jonas leaves then the community will have to feel the pain, love, sadness, and anger. But they are unsure if the plan is going to work or not (the abyss). The Giver who has all the memories is the (mentor). He was once the Receiver of Memories but he is getting to old so he’s giving all his memories to Jonas. So on the planned night of escape Jonas leaves his house (the transformation).

There isn’t a return to this Hero’s Journey because Jonas never returns home to his family, community, or home. The creation is unknown because we don’t know if Jonas’s journey changed the community for the better or the worst.

Tamsin Noy- Finnal Exam Essay

A hero has been betrayed, in his moment where he needed help the most. In his greatest battle he will have to remember the magic and the advice from a wise old man. This story could have a sad ending or a joyous one. In this type of story lies a framework that is in many other marvelous stories, the romance motif. The romance motif is one of my favorite types of stories. It has everything that makes a story exceptional. It has a faithful follower, a wise old man, dreams, the number three, magic, testing of the follower, and betrayal. The romance motif is the backbone to most great stories. The Giver, for example has everthing from the romance motif that makes it the magical story it is.

The faithful follower in this book could be Gabe. Gabe was an innocent baby that seemed to have the same gift as Jonas. He was the only one that Jonas wanted to keep safe from a world that kept him from true happiness. Jonas's gift allowed him to meet his mentor, the wise old man brilliantly named The Giver. This wise old man had that magic to give his memories to Jonas; both memories of happiness and of pain. These magical memories took the form of very realistic dreams.

The powerful number three also has a place in this story. There are threee people who have the gift to see the world for what it really is. Jonas, Gabe, and the Giver all had the gift, but those three characters had to follow different paths. Jonas found out that his father has betrayed him by lying and killing people when they were released. When Jonas started to realize that the world he lived in was all wrong and unjust he chose to run away from his community and find a better world outside. He took Gabe with him out into the wilderness where he had seen things he's never experienced before.

The Giver chose to stay behind to help the community. After Jonas left, his memories would scare the community and The Giver wanted to stay and support them. In the meantime Jonas was testing his follower by bringing Gabe through freezing cold and starvation. The ending is both sad and blissful. Either way the reader interprets it, though, Jonas and Gabe were still free.

This story, just like many others, wouldn't be great without the blueprints of the romance motif. It is classic and also modern in how it is used. After learning about it I now notice the romance motif in almost all of the stories I read, and even in the movies I see. There is something romantic in the way the readers see the hero if he goes through the same framework of the romance motif. It's what makes a hero memorable.

Joseph Connelly- Final Exam Essay- Satire's Finest

Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Its creation is completed. The greatest and most profound idea to ever cross my mind. Once every being has heard my idea textbooks, T.V. shows, and even teachers will preach the words of my creation.

Well, did you know we, yes us Americans, have an epidemic on our hands? A crisis so severe that if not taken care of it may spread. Spread to every household! It's an ominous, gruesome, virus that will latch itself upon us all if not stopped.

My solution? It's simple. Most brilliantly simple indeed. To start, we first begin increase. We need to escalate, inflate, and maximize agriculture to its fullest. Vegetables and fruits must be produced at a quickness not comprehensible to the common man. Abolish all and every other type of food: doughnuts, chocolates, ice cream, and candy.

Now the following step must derive itself from the Law. It will become law that all who violate it will be punished only by death. That all beings will follow the one cardinal rule: eat, but eat only that of vegetables and fruits. No exceptions. Absolutely none. Forever or ever.

Thus by imposing this greatest and most profound idea ever conceived by man, we may all dispose of an ominous epidemic. We will conclusively abolish obesity and have it cease to exist.

Shawnese Johnson-Values Poem

"I'm Gone"
All the memories I have consist of your face
I'm slowly getting over you
My sorrow & tears are finally starting to erase
My nights aren't so lonely
My days are starting to turn out o.k.
I no longer wish to spend every second with you of every day
I'm putting away the pictures & wiping away the tears
leaving everything in the past
including all those stuffed teddy bears
I'm thru with all the games you tried to play with me
its time to upgrade cuz in case you didn't know I'm WIFEY!!
I'm done with the cheating
I'm over all yo lies
I'm so tired of the " I'm not like all those other guys"
so turn up those jams,
listen to your favorite song
every time you hear the words "I love you" think of me
cuz this time its no turning back,
I'M GONE!!

Equality by definition is a quality or state of being equal. Basically this is every human being on the same level. No person is above the other person, everyone is treated he same, and no type of discrimination.

Equality is seen in different forms. The Giver by Lois Lowry displays equableness with everyone in society living with the same birthday with rituals as they grow. The people talk the same and think the same because of civilization rules and boundaries.

The Giver gives but one side of equality while Democracy shows another side. In this novel conditions of all people were leveled, but people were not free to pursue careers or activities of own likings. They were forced to be equal while democracy gives citizens freedom of opportunity. As to say people are not viewed as the same and opportunity is to be earned and not given. The problem with this is that opportunity is not the same for every person because of conditions. You’re much more likely to be successful if you come from a suburb than to come from a ghetto that’s real life scenario. This is clarified by Irving Kristol as he states, “Democracy does not guarantee equality of conditions-it only guarantees equality of opportunity.”

The word equal comes from the Roman Language. It was used as a general principle of justice, as served to correct legal codes. It is considered a highly contested concept. This word can be used as to help non discrimination by websites such as
www.Equalityproject.org. Sites like massequality.org uses equality to promote same sex marriage. Either way you use the word, the concept never change.

People have died over equal tranquility since the world began. The problem comes in many forms big or small. Equality is the quality or state of being equal. When did people decide they are better than the next individual? Obviously ego and pride play a major role but it is that feature that will most likely destroy the earth. Many humans have never realized that we are all the same under the creator. When Judgment Day comes we will all fall. The reaper does not care about color, height, weight, skills, or features.

Courage comes in lots of different means, Courage means mental or moral strength to venture persevere and with stand danger, fear or difficulty. Courage also known as fortitude, is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty or intimidation. Courage to me has lots of meanings, i think it means to have braveness, to stand up for yourself or for someone else, and have moral strength. It is well understood that physical and moral courage matters in the military, and there are sample illustrations of courage in religion, sometimes to the point of martyrdom. It can be divided into ''physical courage'', which means to face physical pain, hardship, and threat of death. Moral courage means to face shame, scandal, and discouragement. In the movie '' The Whale Rider'' the little girl wants to learn about the ancient times but her grandpa won't let here, so she goes against the grandpa on learning about the ancient times, so she has the courage to ride the whale. Martin Luther King Jr said '' if you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream''. There are different websites on courage like: www.courage.com, www.couragerc.net, www.couragelender.com, www.courageforyouth.com, and www.couragerenewal.org. The word courage came from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. because of the way he spoke to the people and the way he felt about having a Dream.
Courage in Latin is Coraticum which means Heart.
Courage in Spanish means Coraje, Valentia, and Valor.
Courage in French is Bravoure, which means to be brave.

Courage
Mental or moral strength to venture, persevere and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.Going out to overcome or overshadow your fears or something difficult. Courageous people, we say, are those who take things in their stride, or lay their bodies on the line, as yesterday's idiom had it. Courage is one of the four Cardinal Virtues in Roman Catholicism.

In the story of Shooting an Elephant the man had to step up to shoot the elephant. He had to make a decision on shooting it or not. The courage is more based on what the village would say about him. The part where he tried to walk up slowly to the elephant is were he showed the most courage.

In the book of The Giver, Jonas had to receive some memories of courage from the giver. But he does not get enough courage before his big journey to escape. He runs out of memories that have courage so he doesn't know what to do. But he goes on fighting for his and Gabriels life. Seeking deep inside him for that last bit of courage with in him.

Alan Cohen once said, "It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to Embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security there is life, and in change there is power."

In the good words of Martin Luther King, Jr. "If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose the courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream. The Trumne at Conscience.

Courage
This well known Quote." Near this spot are deposited the remains of who possessed beauty with out vanity, strength without isolence,Courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man, without his vice." By George Noel Gordon, Lord-Byron.
Origins of courage and history use are Svenska, Polski, Portugues, and Espanol.
The descriptions of courage are defined as mental or mortal strength to venture perservere, and with stand danger, fear, or difficulty. As my own aspects of the word courage i feel having strength to presue and do things that you may have fear in. Just having courage to do things as in motivation, strength and belief thats what i feel is courage.
My word courage demonstrates the movie Whale rider; very well because their was alot of courage with the little girl Piekea had courage to do alot of things she wasn't suppose to do. Doing things only boys are suppose to learn and do,trying to change her Garndpa's mind about things that way she can particapate in activities.

Obligation is a condition or feeling of being obligated or having to do something weather you want to or not. like if you have a freind that you have known for most of your life and a girlfreind that you have had for a few weeks or even a few months and your feind and her are fighting. You would be obligated to choose your freinds side, mainly due to the fact you have been freinds for years. that is why they have the saying's "Bro's before hoe's and sisstas before mista's."

In the story th whale rider; the little girl felt obligated to impress her grandfather. She felt this way because she was the first born and the first born should have been a boy accordeing to there customs. She also felt obligated at the end of the story to help the beached whale. When the whale was safe, she felt she should ride the whale as long as she could so her grandfather would welcome her as if she were a man.

In the story the giver; the boy felt obligated to help the comunitee. He held all the memories and feelings so that no one ealse had to. The giver in the story felt obligated to help the boy to escape but could not leave with because the giver felt obligated to also stay and help the comunitee with the lose of the reciver and the flooding of feelings and memories.

Frncois Duc De La Rochefoucauld once said "Too great haste in paying off an obligation is a kind of ingraditude". Which to me means that if you pay off a debt or favor to some one too soon, they could take it as if want to get it done so you have to deal with them again.

Some of the sites that i got my information from are: www.humanityquest.com, www.answers.com, www.sojo.net/index.crm?action=magazine.artic&issue=soj98078&article=980721, www.links.jstor.org, and www.stsavanc.org. on these sites i was able to find a few ways to say obligation. like verpflichtung which is german, devoir which happens to be french, de verplichting which is dutch, obbligo which is italian, or obligaicion which is spanish.

As Alice James said in her diary, on November 19, 1889. "When will women begin to have the first glimmer that above all other loyalties is loyalty to truth, i.e., to yourself, that husband, children, freinds and country are as nothing to that?"
In a book we read, The Giver, the main character, Jonas, lives with a family unit, since the book takes place in the future. In his family unit are his mother, his father, his sister and him. His community is basically a controlled one with no choices. He is assigned a mentor, The Giver, he has to show him his assignment which is giving him memories. Jonas then becomes very loyal to him and does as he says. Later on in the book Jonas needs to run away from his community in order to help it. Once he does leave he is being disloyal to his community and family unit, but loyal to his mentor.
Also in a movie we saw in class, The Whale Rider, the main character, Paikea, the granddaughter of a well respected man in a community, in New Zeland. Paikea is not at all loyal to her grandfather, because since she is a girl in her community it means she needs to stay still and not do anything but chores and work around the house. She does the opposite of what the grandfather says and she learns alot about her past generations, which she wasn't suppose to do. That to her grandfather was very disloyal.
Some internet sites that use loyalty are Loyalty.com. "The loyalty group creates incrementa value for our clients by enhancing their coustomer relationship through loyalty." E-loyalty.com. "We teach e-marketers how to develope e-loyalty strategy." Amazon.com. "Loyalty, it's why customers keep coming back to our website." Proyectopv.org. "Loyalty is the key that permits us to have authentic acheivements when we relate." Humanityquest.com. "It is used in every way to find definitions and more."
The origin of loyalty is c. 1400. from O. Fr. loyalte (Fr. loyaute), from O. Fr. loial, from L. legalis "legal", from lex (gen. legis "law") Replaced Anglo-Norm. Leal (q.v.), from the same L. source sense developement in English is feudal, via nation of "faithfull in carrying out legal obligations" Loyalty oath first attested in 1952.
In any language, loyalty sounds the same. In Spanish, Lealtad, in French, loyaute, or in Italian, Fedelta, even in shakesperean era, Shakespeare used it in his play, King Henry VI, part III, i, 202. "In thy face I see The map of honor, truth, and loyalty."
Loyalty is a very important word we should practice everyday because it is the quality or state of being loyal. Its the tie binding a person to something to which he is loyal. In my mind its being there for freinds, and mostly family because they will always be loyal to you.

When you hear the word courage what comes to mind? How can you define courage? Do you believe it only has one meaning or others as well. Here's the definition i got for courage.
COURAGE: mental or moral strength to venture preserve and withstand danger, fear, and difficulty.
The reason why i choose this word is because i think it relates to the movie we watched THE WHALE RIDER . The word courage reminded me about the young girl in that movie Pakea of how much she wanted to prove to her grandfather that she could do all the other things that the boys did at school since the girls couldn't go because they didn't want them learning more than the boys.
I do believe that she had alot of courage she dis obeyng her grandfather letting him know that she was capable of doing alll the things that the boys couldn't for example when the father took the boys to the ocean to try and catch his shark teeth no one could but the next day when the took Pakea to the ocean she was able to give her grandfather his necklace back plus she also grabbed a lobster to eat that same day . So i do believe that courage fits Pakea exactly.
Here's a famous quote i found on the Internet by James Freeman Clarke and it says something like this: Conscience is the root of all true courage, If a man would be brave let him obey the conscience.
Here's are other sentences that i found on that same website. John Courage for congress. Finding courage within you. The physical courage of the astronauts and others. Teaching guide for courage produced in association with chard counts. Well understood psychical and moral courage matter in the military.
I also found courage in three different languages Italian-carggio, Spanish- valor, Dutch tapperkeit.

The word loyalty evolved as fellow-feeling for one's family, gene-group and friends. Loyalty comes most from naturally amongst small groups or tribes where the prospect of the whole casting out the individual seems like the ultimate, unthinkable rejection. In a feuadal society, centered on personal bonds of mutual obligation, accounting for precise degrees of protection and fellowship can prove difficult. Loyalty in these circumstances can become a matter of extremes: alternative groups may exist, but lacki of mobility will foster a personal sense of loyalty. Wars of a religion and their interminglings with wars of states have seen loyalty used in religious senses too, involving faithful support of a chosen or traditional set of beliefs or of sports representatives. And in modern times marketing has postulated loyalties to abstract concepts such as the brand.
Customer churn has become the opposite of loyalty, just as high treason once stood as the opposite of the same idea. Compare loyalty card. A person can be loyal to something and something can be loyal to a person. Loyalty is also seen in business in a variety of ways. As governments have grown in size and scope, some people are more loyal to a company rather than to a country. As corporation complexity has grown, people have shifted their loyalties to individuals rather than companies. As those individuals move between companies, they often take other people with them. Stock options are one method devised to keep a people loyal to a company. Loyalty means the stare of quality of being loyal, a feeling or attitude of devoted attachment and affection. Loyalty is faithfulness or a devotion to a person or cause.
In the movie Whale Rider the little girl was very loyal to her grandpa even when he was very rude to her. She really proved that she respected her elders. Respect is almost like being loyal. In the end he realized how mean he was to her. He gave her more respect and loyalty.

I found many websites looking for loyalty at: www.comarch.com It attracts new customers and develop your business. Also at www.kudoshow.com Kudo's employee recognition program think different; culture of giving. Also at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty it just helped me find out what loyalty really is about.

Some quotes I found for loyalty is:
"Loyalty is still the same, whether it win or lose the game; true as a dial to the sun, although it be not shined upon". "Loyalty is something you give up regardless of what yoiu get back, and in giving loyalty, you're getting more loyalty; and out of loyalty flow other qualities".

In French loyalty is LOYAUTE In German loyalty is LOYALITAT

In Portuguese loyalty is LEALDADE

The word determination comes from the Middle English from Latin. It can be said in many different languages; Spanish, Determincion, Italian, determinaione, and German, Entscheidung. Determination means the settling and ending of a controversy. The self-determination theory is to endorse one's actions at the highest level of reflection, and the freedom to do what is interesting. In my opinion it means getting done what needs to get done, and trying hard to achieve a goal.
Alexander Graham Bell once said, "What this power is I cannot say; all I know is that it exists and it becomes available only when a man is in that state of mind in which he knows exactly what he wants and is fully determined not to quit until he finds it." The girl in Whale Rider shows that she has a lot of self-determination. In Whale Rider, the little girl is determined to prove that she is good enough to be the chosen one even though she is a girl. Her grandpa wouldn't let her because he wanted to respect the ancient ways. But she didn't let discouragement affect her determination to become the chosen one. She was faced with many challenges when her uncle was teaching her how to fight the ancient ways. She wanted to wanted to show them that she was worthy. Because of her determination, the grandpa finally accepted her as the new chief and he broke tradition.
While searching the internet i found many websites that have to do with determination. www.psych.rochester.edu/SDT talks about the self-determination theory. Also www. self determination.com talks about a working collaboration of individuals and organizations committed to the principles of self determination to help all persons create the life they want. www.ssa.gov/disability/determination.htm talks about the decision for disability determination services through the social security administration. The self determination committee is another website. It talks about how they help educate the African slaves descent on how to become self determined. Also the self determination- wikipedia the free encyclopedia shows the history of the word.

Integrity, an unimpaired or unmarred condition. In other words doing whats right no matter who's looking. The word comes from middle English, french, and Latin. Its basically the same in three different languages: German-integritat, Portuguese-integridade, and Spanish-integraidad.
The word reminds me of a story called 'Shooting an Elephant' by George Orwell. This is a book about solder who is hated by the people of the land and hates what he's fighting for. An elephant goes wild in the neighbor hood so he has to kill it or else he will be laughed at, which is a British solders worst fear. Although he feels that's its wrong to kill the elephant, and wants to just move it out of the area, he kills it. He wished that he hadn't, he wished that he had integrity. He did the wrong thing because everyone was looking.
Its a word that is used in print, speeches and so on. "Live with INTEGRITY, respect the rights of other people, and follow your own bliss" The famous author Nathaniel Branden's words of encouragement. This word is used to be very motivating and bold. Like in the words of Charles Caleb Colton " Nothing more completely baffles one who is full of tricks and duplicity than straight forward and simple INTEGRITY in another." Text, like in magazines and news articles also use it to describe a person or organization. The Washington Post, for example" He has the character, honesty, and INTEGRITY to make a great president."
I was searching the Internet to find what kind of websites use the word integrity; two of them were church sites (www.integrityUSA.com and www.integrityworship.com). Two others were online computer companies (www.integrityservices.com and www.integrity.com). The last one I found was for horse, stock, and cargo trailers (www.integritytrailers.com).
Integrity, its a good word to live by. If its buying trailers, going to church, admiring others, wishing you could have it, even just writing an essay. Integrity is a trait everyone should have. It's doing whats right no matter who's looking.

Privilege.
Privilege is a right or immunity granted to certain people in order for them to carry a responsibility or to enjoy of something. I t derives from the Latin word privlegium.
Many books take use of this word, to refer to something great or hard to achieve; like in The Giver by Lewis Lowry; the main character called Jonas is given the privilege of holding the memories of a whole community so well organized, but that lacked feelings, and lived in an environment of sameness. It is a hard assignment for Jonas, since he will have to feel things he didn't knew about. Also along with that assignment he had to pay the price, he felt lonely and pain because of the memories he was given. He also had the choice of lying to other members of the community and read books that were different from the ones he used to read at school, those activities, regular members of the community could not do.
Privilege is a word that has been used for a long time. Marcus Aurelius, a Roman Emperor said: "When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive -to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love." This explains what privilege meant for him, in this case, being alive and do everything that came along with it. The most important from my point of view were to think, enjoy, and love.
Many of us see things as a privilege, and we all have a different concept of the word, but it all comes down to having a greater responsibility that we might as well enjoy.

Kawatta, différent, and dissimilis, in any other language the word "different" to me still means to stand out and/or be out of the ordinary. "Different from" and "different than" are both common in British and American English. The construction "different to" is mainly British because the 18th century, language critics have singled out "different than" as incorrect. Traditional guidlines say "from" is used to compare between two persons or things.

"In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different." This is a quote by Coco Chanel that explains how being atypical is not something to fear but something to strive for. In the book The Giver Jonas was peculiar from everyone else because he was the only one who could learn of true pain and happiness. The community that Jonas lived in cherished similarities and knew of no other way of living. After he learned of an offbeat way of life that his community was ignorant of Jonas chose to run away and join a new community. Jonas' strive to be different lead him to his freedom.

In the movie "Whale Rider" the girl, Paikea, chose to break the rules to become a very important person in her village. In her village males were the ones who studied the ancient ways. She broke the rules and learned the ancient ways and inadvertently became the chief of the village by passong some of the most difficult test of the ancient ways. If she hadn't chose to be different and break the rules she would have never become the most important person in her village.

We all have the freedom to be different. It is something we should try to achieve and not to fear just because our community expects us to be similar. We must learn to fight for what we believe in ourselves and learn from our lessons of "Shooting an Elephant." Our differences will make us irreplaceable.

Equality

Equality is the quality of state of being equal. I think equality basically means being equal. The origin of equality came from the Latin word “aequus” which became “aequalis” for Middle English.

Equality is used by many authors in lots of books. Equality relates to “Shakespear’s Sister” because she was one of the many that tried to make women’s rights as equal as men’s. Equality also relates to “The Giver.” There’s an organized world where everyone is equal. If you were to be at all different, you were to be released.

Back in the day when the blacks and whites were treated unequally, Martin Luther King, JR. preached some hard-core quotes about equality that touched many people. Not only did Martin Luther King, JR’s quotes touch people in his days, but it also lives on until today. Here is one of his famous quotes about equality that touched many people.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character

Martin Luther King, JR.

I found a lot of information on equality on many different internet sites. I went to www.google.com. There was www.equality.org. I also went to www.equalitynetwork.com. Then I searched on www.equality.com, but it really wasn’t what I was looking for. Then I went to www.equalitynow.com and that didn’t help much either. Most of these web sites didn’t really get me the information that I really needed for my assignment, but I it gave me enough for me to get through it.

The definition of courage is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. The origin of the word courage comes from the Latin word “cor” which means he*art. In three other languages, German, Italian, and Spanish the word courage is “mut, coraggio, and valor. ” My definition isn’t the same but basically means the same thing. Courage to me is not being afraid to be different, doing what you feel is right, stepping out side of your box and having heart. Like the little girl in Whale Rider did. Her grandfather told her plenty of times that she couldn’t be a whale rider. But the girl had courage, she felt in her heart that she was meant to be a whale rider and she proved everybody wrong. She also had courage when she road the whale because she knew that she could’ve died by doing that but she wasn’t scared she knew it’s what she had to do and she did it regardless of what everybody told her. In the story “Shooting an Elephant” the man had a different kind of courage he had Kodak courage, doing what is right at the time. Because he didn’t want to kill the elephant but he knew that if he didn’t he would be laughed at by the people. So instead of doing what he felt was right he did what he thought the people would want him to do.

I found a couple quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt and a couple unknown artists that I liked. These first two by Eleanor Roosevelt. “We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face…..we must do that which we think we cannot.” And then this one “Do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you’ll be criticized anyways.” These next two are by unknown artist. “Courage is not defined by those who fought and did not fall but by those who fought fell and rose again.” And this one “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” I just think that these four quotes really define courage.
I found five websites with the word courage in it. www.wiwpedia.org says it is well known that physical and moral courage matters in the military. www.courage.org is a website for a mission courage center were the mission is to empower people with physical disabilities to reach for their full potential in every aspect of life. www.ejectejecteject.com says moral courage is the courage of the astronauts’ believing in space. www.fastcompany.com is a website about finding courage within you. www.couragecamp.com is a websites for courage camps.

English 7-8: Choice(s)

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “One’s philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes…and the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.” Great emphasis should be given to the word choices, as it is the main idea of this quote. What Eleanor Roosevelt meant was that a person’s ideas and thoughts can never be expressed clearly in words, but through the choices they make, those thoughts can be seen and heard for miles. Simply, you can tell what kind of a person someone is through the choices they make.

The word choice significantly influences or has influenced almost everybody. The formal, dictionary, definition of the word choice is the act or power of picking or choosing. A choice can also be the variety that is offered for selection. For example, when you are deciding what to major in, in college, you are making a choice or choosing. The possible majors that that particular college or university offers, are your choices. In French, the word choice or choices is les choix (layz-shwa), in Spanish it is Opciones and in German it is Wahlen (vuh-len).

In the book, The Giver, Lois Lowry, the author, demonstrates a world considerably lacking in choices, or emotions for that matter. The citizens of a small community ( in the book) have everything chosen for them, from their toys to their occupations. In my opinion, Lois Lowry displays a choice less community to show the reaches the eminent role choices play in our world.
Today, there are many websites that probably use the word choice. During my research, I found five websites that are based on the word choice. www.helpforteens.com was the first website I had come across. The purpose of this website was to help teens make the right choices in their lives. From peer pressure to college, this website had it all and was great. The second website, www.statschoices.com, was a more specific website, designed by the University of Nebraska to advise new students on making the right choices when it comes to registering for classes. www.lifechoices.com and www.lifechoices.org were both websites similar in address, but different in content. The life choices.com website contained links to other appropriate entertainment websites, whereas the life choices.org website was dedicated to helping pregnant women make the right choices during their pregnancies. www.choicesarizona.org, the last website on my list, was actually created by a non-profit organization which is dedicated to legally giving the terminally or hopelessly ill the choice of death.
Choices have and will continue to play a dominating role in our society. From the moment we learn to talk to the moment we die, we are always faced with choices, always!!!
